Biography of Janet Chrzan

Janet Chrzan holds a doctorate in Nutritional Anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania, where she is an adjunct assistant professor of nutrition in the School of Nursing.

Janet Chrzan

While her academic research explores the connections between nutrition and health in pregnancy, her avocation is local food history and healthy eating. Passionate about the potential for fresh food to encourage better health, in 2007 she started a farmers market in a suburb of Philadelphia. With the help of an active and committed board of trustees that organization has become an educational not-for-profit that provides free nutrition and healthy eating lessons to adults and children in schools and community groups.

Janet is the past-president of the Society for the Anthropology of Food and Nutrition and is active in a number of other food and nutrition organizations including les Dames d'Escoffier, the Association for the Study of Food and Society and the Agriculture, Food and Human Values Association. She is the author of Alcohol: Social Drinking in Cultural Context and is currently working on a book about organic food and agriculture. Her other bad habits are wine, travel, and eating cheese.
